Buenaventura Lakes hosts Memorial Day ceremony

The last Monday in May is set aside to remember and reflect.Memorial Day is also about honoring fallen members of the U.S. military.There was a special remembrance in the Osceola County community of Buenaventura Lakes.The 21-gun salute is the highest honor recognized and at a Memorial Day event in Osceola County, the community remembered and mourned all the personnel who died in the line of duty.That includes Georgia-based U.S. soldiers injured and killed in a Middle East drone strike this year. “With more than 40 others that are injured, they are U.S. Army Sgt. Breonna Alexandria Moffett of Georgia,” Congressman Darren Soto said.This Memorial Day event at the 65th Infantry Veterans Park in Kissimmee is the first-ever in the Buenaventura Lakes community.Local veterans were also honored, including St. Cloud Marine Jason Burnett, who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom.The 20-year-old Lance Corporal drowned with three other Marines in Iraq in 2006 when their tank plunged off a bridge during a combat patrol. His coat is in a local museum.”That’s in the Osceola County Military Museum, which we’re also proud of. It’s on West U.S. 192 in Kissimmee,” state Rep. Paula Stark said.Osceola County state representative Paula Stark hosted this Memorial Day event.”We’re just a huge military community from one side to the other, so we’re really, really proud of that,” Stark said. “So I’m glad we were able to bring this to this side of the community so we can celebrate the east side a little bit.””I now call for a moment of silence to remember those since last Memorial Day,” Congressman Darren Soto said.The laying of the wreaths symbolizes the beauty and brevity of life.At the end of this ceremony, there are tTps to honor service members who paid the ultimate price.
