Buccaneers dealt troubling Chris Godwin injury news

Chris Godwin’s 2024 NFL campaign was cut short by a gruesome season-ending ankle dislocation in Week 7.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver suffered serious ligament damage and underwent surgery this past spring, and he returned to action in Week 4, taking the field for the Buccaneers’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 29-year-old pass-catcher also played in this past Sunday’s Week 5 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Unfortunately for Tampa Bay, the veteran wide receiver appeared to suffer an injury setback this past weekend.

Godwin appeared on the Buccaneers’ Wednesday injury report with a fibula injury, notching a did not participate designation for the practice session. He was absent from practice yet again on Thursday.

With two consecutive DNPs, Godwin’s status for Sunday’s matchup against the San Francisco 49ers could be in serious jeopardy.

Cornerback Benjamin Morrison (hamstring), wide receiver Mike Evans (hamstring) and running back Bucky Irving (foot/shoulder) were also absent, according to team insider Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

Godwin was one of the NFL’s leading wide receivers before suffering his season-ending ankle injury in 2024, reeling in 50 catches for 576 yards and five touchdowns through seven games. He struggled to produce in each of his two appearances this season, catching three passes for 26 yards in both games.

With Godwin and Evans out, quarterback Baker Mayfield has found his new favorite target in rookie wideout Emeka Egbuka. The No. 19 overall pick out of Ohio State has 25 catches for 445 yards and five touchdowns in his first five NFL appearances.
