Brookline police are giving out tips to avoid credit card skimmers after one was found at a Harvard Avenue gas station.
A manager at the gas station was notified by a private financial services company that several cards used at a particular pump later experienced fraud, Brookline police said in a statement. The cards flagged were used at the pump between Jan. 16 and March 15.
Police did not say which gas station on Harvard Avenue. There’s a Sunoco, Stop & Shop, and Mobil gas station on Harvard Avenue near Coolidge Corner.
Brookline police said detectives are actively investigating.
The skimmer used bluetooth technology to send card information to a third party, police said in a video shared to Facebook. They recommend using a cell phone to check for nearby bluetooth connections.
If “HC-05,” or something similar, comes up as a possible connection, there’s a skimmer nearby. Police say to not use the pump and alert the gas station.
