A broken ankle stranded a 63-year-old woman and her dog on a steep Washington trail, deputies said.
Then she contacted rescuers.
Joanna Dittemore used her inReach satellite device to send an SOS text to rescuers at 12:16 p.m. Sept. 18, the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
The Everett woman had broken her ankle at Lake Lillian in Snoqualmie Pass while hiking with her dog, Baker, deputies said.
Deputies said they couldn’t carry Dittemore out on a litter because of the “extremely steep” terrain, so they hoisted the woman and her dog from the area.
The hiker was then taken to a hospital with her husband.
Dittemore commented on the Facebook post and said she needs surgery on her injured ankle.
“Without In Reach and the chopper, we’d still be out there. Please get yourself a satellite communicator (I was able to text directly with SAR),” she said in the post.
“This quick, safe response was partly due to this hiker’s proper equipment and calm action under pressure,” deputies said.
