Bradshaw Animal Shelter seeks volunteers to calm animals during fireworks

[ad_1]

(FOX40.COM) — The Bradshaw Animal Shelter in Sacramento County is looking for volunteers to calm animals during July 4th fireworks.

According to the shelter, the loud noises associated with the displays can distress pets.

The shelter, located at 3839 Bradshaw Road, is asking people to sit, read, sing or play an instrument to the animals during the holiday.

“All of the noises caused by celebrations are terrifying for the animals and they don’t understand what is happening,” said Celeste Ingrid, Volunteer Program Coordinator for the Bradshaw Animal Shelter. “The human voice can be a very powerful tool for calming animals down.”

Those looking to sign up can register online. Minors between ages 12 and 17 can participate but must be accompanied by an adult.

The shelter also offered tips for those looking to keep their own pets safe:

  • Keep pets indoors at home in a sheltered, secured, quiet area or turn on the TV or soothing music to drown out outside sounds.
  • Remove any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful if chewed.
  • If you know that your pet is distressed by loud noises, consult with your veterinarian in advance.
  • Be sure your pets are wearing identification tags, are microchipped and are licensed with updated information to help with their prompt return

If your pet does get lost and ends up at the shelter, Bradshaw Animal Shelter said it is waiving owner redemption fees from July 1 to July 15.
