BENGALURU: Closing access to some underpasses during rain, making new drains to divert rainwater and deploying new technology to manage stormwater drains are among the measures that BBMP will execute to mitigate problems in monsoon, that is all set to hit the city in June first week.
The underpass at the junction of Sankey Road and Cunningham Road near Le Meridien remained closed to traffic as on Tuesday. Traffic police and BBMP had shut it after the KR Circle underpass was flooded and claimed a life on Sunday. An audit conducted by BS Prahalad, the BBMP engineer-in-chief, meanwhile, found Le Meridien and Cauvery junction underpasses in Central Business District to be dangerous during rain.
Reports on six underpasses – those at Cauvery junction, near Le Meridien, Mathikere, New BEL Road, Anandanagar and Sujatha theatre – have been submitted (to BBMP), while two in CBD were found to be dangerous. The engineering division found that they lacked proper drainage system.
The civic authority has decided to adopt the Delhi model of installing sheds at Cauvery Junction and Le Meridien underpasses to prevent rainwater from directly entering them.
Prahalad is said to have recommended some corrections for the other four underpasses too.
