The civic body-run Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) on Monday said it collected eight tonnes of waste from the city’s Central Business District (CBD) where New Year celebrations were held on a massive scale.

According to officials, huge amounts of waste were collected from M G Road, Brigade Road, Church Street, Residency Road, Richmond Road, Saint Marks Road, and Kasturba Road, among others. About 80 poura karmikas (civic employees), three supervisors, one compactor, and seven auto tippers were deployed to collect the waste.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in a press statement said mostly plastic covers, footwear, liquor bottles, and clothes were picked up during the garbage-collection drive.

“I believe the crowd was educated and there were dustbins placed in the roads for convenience. However, most of the garbage that we have collected was outside these bins. Had we not collected the waste, it would have affected vehicle movement on Monday,” a BBMP official said.

A police head constable from Bengaluru rural district and three others have been arrested in Odisha’s Kandhamal on the charges of possessing Marijuana and sent to 14-day judicial custody.

The police in Karnataka claim Anand K, a police head constable attached to the Jigani police station in Bengaluru rural district, was investigating the case but there was a procedural lapse that led to his arrest.

The others who were arrested by Sarangada police on November 1 are Jayant, an Odia interpreter, Shyam Sundar, a police informant, and Naresh Pradhan, a suspect in a drug supply case in Jigani.

According to a police officer in Karnataka, Anand K was in Odisha to investigate a drug peddling case reported in October, which revealed the role of Sujit Rawat, a Marijuana supplier from Odisha who sent the contraband through trains. Jigani police received information from Naresh during the probe, and sent their team to Odisha for further crackdown on the gang.

A senior police officer said, “A team of six police officers led by Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Appaji took Sundar and Jayant with them. Jayant, who knew Odia, helped with translation. On October 31, the Bengaluru SP permitted them to go to Odisha. The next day, when the police had laid a trap posing as drug peddlers, Sundar managed to contact peddlers who agreed to supply 17 kg of Marijuana”.

Bengaluru: Two CBD underpasses deemed dangerous, one of them closed | Bengaluru News – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

BENGALURU: Closing access to some underpasses during rain, making new drains to divert rainwater and deploying new technology to manage stormwater drains are among the measures that BBMP will execute to mitigate problems in monsoon, that is all set to hit the city in June first week.
The underpass at the junction of Sankey Road and Cunningham Road near Le Meridien remained closed to traffic as on Tuesday. Traffic police and BBMP had shut it after the KR Circle underpass was flooded and claimed a life on Sunday. An audit conducted by BS Prahalad, the BBMP engineer-in-chief, meanwhile, found Le Meridien and Cauvery junction underpasses in Central Business District to be dangerous during rain.
Reports on six underpasses – those at Cauvery junction, near Le Meridien, Mathikere, New BEL Road, Anandanagar and Sujatha theatre – have been submitted (to BBMP), while two in CBD were found to be dangerous. The engineering division found that they lacked proper drainage system.
The civic authority has decided to adopt the Delhi model of installing sheds at Cauvery Junction and Le Meridien underpasses to prevent rainwater from directly entering them.
Prahalad is said to have recommended some corrections for the other four underpasses too.
Sources said apart from reports on seven underpasses, including the one at KR Circle where a woman died after the vehicle she was travelling in was submerged, Prahalad was preparing reports on eight other underpasses, to be submitted to BBMP on…
