The bookseller says strong sales and recent momentum are driving a major expansion after years of store closures.

WASHINGTON — Barnes & Noble is planning a major expansion in the new year, announcing it will open 60 new stores across the U.S. in 2026, according to USA Today.

The planned openings come after nearly two decades of declining store numbers for the bookseller. Barnes & Noble has already opened dozens of new locations in 2025, and executives say the momentum is expected to continue into next year as sales remain
“strong.”

While specific locations and opening dates are still being finalized, Barnes & Noble confirmed to USA Today that the expansion is driven by sustained growth in existing stores.

“Barnes & Noble is enjoying a period of tremendous growth as the strategy to hand control of each bookstore to its local booksellers has proven so successful,” the company said in a statement. “In 2024, Barnes & Noble opened more new bookstores in a single year than it had in the whole decade from 2009 to 2019.”

If you’re looking to shop for books, toys, games or gifts, a list obtained by USA Today says the company plans to open new stores in Ohio, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Colorado, Washington, California, Virginia, Georgia and Washington, D.C., with several openings scheduled between now and June 2026.
