SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A cross-country United Airlines flight that departed from San Francisco International Airport on Tuesday morning was turned around to address a mechanical issue, airport officials said.
United flight 2664 took off from SFO at 9:47 a.m., destined for Baltimore-Washington International Airport, before landing back in the Bay Area around 10:42 a.m., flight tracking data showed. The Boeing 737-Max 9 was turned around “to address a plastic burning smell in the cabin,” according to a United spokesperson.
The flight safely landed back at SFO with 164 passengers and eight crew members on board.

“Customers deplaned normally at the gate, and we’ve arranged for a different aircraft to take them to their destination,” United wrote in a statement.
The airline did not comment on the source of the burning smell.
