CLEVELAND (WJW) – The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s newest baby made its debut on Friday.
The zoo invited the public to meet the Eastern black rhino calf Friday at the Zoo’s Daniel Maltz Rhino Reserve.
The baby rhino is just about 1 month old. It was born on Saturday, Sept. 13, to 22-year-old mother Kibibbi and 25-year-old father Forrest.
According to the zoo, the calf’s birth was a significant milestone in the conservation of the species.
“Eastern black rhinos are critically endangered, with fewer than 583 adults remaining in the wild. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has a long history of caring for this species, working alongside global conservation partners to secure a future for rhinos in the wild,” stated the zoo.
In addition to seeing the rhino calf for the first time, zoo-goers can help name the zoo’s neweest addition. Through Oct. 15, the zoo said, guests can select from one of three culturally significant names in support of the conservation of this critically endangered species:
- Makena means “happy one”
- Kenza means “treasure”
- Kamari means “like the moon”
