COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its search for the suspect of a Ballston robbery that left a woman with a broken leg. On Saturday, law enforcement officers raided a Colonie hotel in an attempt to find 32-year-old Joseph Hess of Frankfort.

Just before 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Hess allegedly stole a pocketbook from a car in a McDonald’s parking lot on Church Avenue. When a 76-year-old from Ballston Spa attempted to confront him, the suspect put his own car in reverse and hit the victim before leaving the scene, authorities said.

Hess allegedly abandoned his vehicle — which had been reported stolen out of Colonie — behind Mabey’s Moving and Storage on State Route 76 before fleeing on foot into a wooded area east of the store. The victim was taken to Albany Medical Center with compound leg fractures, according to the sheriff’s office.

At about 4 p.m. on Saturday, deputies received a tip that Hess had possibly been seen at Econo Lodge Inn & Suites in Colonie, Captain Dan Morley said. Upon arrival to the scene, authorities reportedly attempted to locate the suspect and advised him to exit the hotel.

Law enforcement was ultimately unable to locate Hess at or inside the hotel, the sheriff’s office told NEWS10. When asked if the suspect had initially been there and fled, or if he was never there to begin with, Captain Morley said it was “tough to say.”

Authorities ask members of the public to immediately call 911 if they see Hess or have any information on Thursday’s robbery. The 32-year-old is described as a white male, around 6’3″, with long brown hair and wearing a long-sleeve white T-shirt and blue jeans.
