PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — An armored truck driver fired shots at would-be robbers on Friday morning in the Holmesburg section of Philadelphia.

It happened around 7:55 a.m. outside a Wawa store on the 7700 block of Frankford Avenue.

Police say that’s where two suspects tried to rob the truck.

The Loomis truck driver fired a gun several times at the suspects, who fled the scene and remain at large.

Chopper 6 was overhead as members of the SWAT team went into homes in the neighborhood, trying to catch up with the suspects.

We have seen investigators going around to businesses in this area looking for surveillance video. There are several that appear to have cameras.

A bullet hole could be seen in a shattered window of the Wawa.

Police later towed away a white Acura which was parked next to the Wawa and had a bullet hole in the driver’s side door.

“It was like one shot, and then it was like, ‘boom boom boom.’ So it was like one and three other shots,” said a witness who lives nearby but wants to remain anonymous.

He heard the shots from inside his house. He said he called 911 and then came out to check on the truck driver.

“He said, ‘I think I shot one in the stomach,’” the witness said, recounting his conversation with the driver.

The driver wasn’t injured. The witness told us the driver seemed shaken up and surprised that it happened.

Nearby business owners were disheartened that this happened so close.

“This avenue is still a viable business district, and we need these people coming into the Thai district to shop,” said Ed Lloyd of Lloyd Sixsmith Sporting Goods.

Anyone with information can call or text Philadelphia police at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or submit an anonymous tip online.
