Sacramento’s Aftershock festival begins with thousands in Discovery Park braving wet weather for bands like Deftones and Blink-182.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Day one of Aftershock officially kicked off Thursday morning at Sacramento’s Discovery Park, billed as the West Coast’s largest rock, punk, and metal festival.
Thousands of fans poured into Sacramento, even as soggy weather left behind puddles and muddy festival grounds. This marks the 13th year of the festival, with dozens of artists performing across multiple stages, including big names like Deftones, Blink-182 and Good Charlotte.
Despite traffic headaches and wet conditions, fans were excited to see their favorite bands.
“Traffic is always bad. Coming in (Highway) 50 was a nightmare. We came up off of (Highway) 99 and trying to deviate. So, we just came through downtown. But you got to expect some delays,” said Justin Illges, who traveled from the Santa Cruz mountains.
Many festival goers said Aftershock is about more than just the music, it’s about sharing the experience with family and reliving memories from the bands they grew up with.
“Just to be able to share with my daughter and take her to an event like this is a big deal for me as a mom, and these are a lot of bands that I grew up listening to as well. So now that she’s interested in them, we kind of get the opportunity to check quite a few of them out together,” said Melissa Bekoff.
Greg Lempko from Folsom said he was especially excited about the nostalgic lineup.
“Just the whole 90s punk lineup that they’re doing just today is fantastic. I’m really excited,” he said.
While some fans came prepared with ponchos and rain gear, others embraced the muddy conditions.
“This is the first rain at Aftershock that I’ve seen,” said Grace Recendez of San Jose. “Now, we’re going roll in the mud.”
Organizers said the morning showers didn’t cause any delays.
“It didn’t really impact us at all. We were able to get everything done. We opened doors on time at 11 a.m. and we plan for everything,” said Chamie McCurry, general manager with Danny Wimmer Presents.
