Advisories issued on developing Atlantic system that could become a hurricane later this week

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) —The National Hurricane Center upgraded the system in the Central Atlantic to “Potential Tropical Cyclone Five” on Sunday evening.

This designation allows the National Hurricane Center to issue tropical storm and hurricane advisories ahead of time, giving local authorities in the warned areas ample opportunity to prepare for an approaching tropical system.

Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued across many Caribbean island chains. The disturbance is just over 800 miles ESE of Puerto Rico and moving west at 25 miles per hour. Hurricane hunters are expected to investigate potential tropical cyclone five on Monday.

The good news for North Carolina and the rest of the East Coast is that confidence is very high this system will turn north through the Atlantic, posing no risk of landfall in the U.S. However, we’ll be watching it closely.

This also doesn’t mean there won’t be impacts. The National Weather Service in Wilmington has already mentioned that they will likely issue Rip Current risk updates next weekend.

This system could become a Category 2 hurricane hundreds of miles away, which will increase the rip current risk along the coast.

If you are planning a trip to the coast during the weekend of August 15 through 17, you should take precautions and might even want to stay out of the water. Rip currents are dangerous and become deadly every year for swimmers who unknowingly get caught in them.

Rip currents can pull you away from the coast, making it sometimes impossible to swim out of them. Experts advise that if you are ever caught in one, swim parallel to the shore until you are no longer being pulled away.

Many of those same experts also recommend simply staying out of the water when the Rip Current risk is high.
