Today we’re visiting with Malgorzata Galietti.
About 30 years ago I purchased a ‘Red Lion’ amaryllis (Hippeastrum ‘Red Lion’, Zones 8–10 or as a houseplant) and sent it to my Grandma Helena, who lived in Krakow, Poland, to help her survive a particularly cold winter. She loved it! She was herself a gardener and horticulturalist, so the ‘Red Lion’ was very much appreciated. Back then, amaryllis bulbs were impossible to find in Poland. Forward to a gloomy winter of 2020; I remembered how much happiness and cheerfulness one amaryllis bulb had produced for my grandma, so I got a ‘Pink Surprise’ to sprinkle some joy during the pandemic winter blues.
This pink beauty began the yearly cycle of blooms and watering. I brought the pots out to the garden for summer and put them asleep in early fall with hopes that when they woke up they would gratefully produce flower stems.
My collection now includes the beautiful ‘Magical Touch’ . . . ,
. . . ‘Sunshine Nymph’ . . . ,
. . . the elegant ‘White Denver’ . . . ,
. . . the classic pink ‘Apple Blossom’ . . . ,
. . . and, of course, ‘Red Lion’, the variety that started it all.
