A day of Olympic activities for kids at Springfield Museums

SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) – There were kids and their families all around the Springfield Museums Wednesday as part of one of their promotions.

For the first Wednesday of each month, both admissions and activities at the Springfield Museums are free for all guests.

“Everyone is a kid here on free Wednesdays, we all have a lot of fun,” said Larissa Murray, Director of Education at Springfield Museums.

Supported by the Art Bridges Foundation, every first Wednesday through 2026 is free and today, a lot of families were taking advantage of it on what seemed to be a gloomy day following the rain. There is also a theme for each free Wednesday.

“We felt like today was a reason for a special occasion, so we decided to give it an Olympic twist for our activities, so they are all based around sports, sports science, movement,” said Murray. The little competitors competed in a triathlon, that consisted of hopscotch, an egg and spoon race, and what seemed like a fan favorite, a ring toss.

Other special Olympic activities included a word search, a balance beam, and learning the science of spin for a baseball pitch. Murray said it’s “so much fun here today. I love it when the quad is full of people and bubbles and everyone is just having a good time and exploring something new.”

The Springfield Museums loves hosting these days for not just kids to have fun, but for parents and grandparents to have fun like kids again.

The next free Wednesday at the Springfield Museum will be in September.
