RICHMOND COUNTY, N.C. (WJZY) — A firefighter was shot while responding to a fire alarm in Richmond County early Monday morning, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
Around 4:30 a.m., the Richmond County Fire Department responded to a fire alarm on Green Lake Road in Ellerbe. During the response, crews were met with gunfire and a firefighter was shot. They were airlifted to UNC Chapel Hill for treatment, officials said.
According to court documents, the firefighter, Jerrry Lyndon Shepard, was shot in the leg by 54-year-old Timothy Lee Hayden, who was using an AR-style rifle.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and eventually arrested Hayden. He was charged with two counts of assault on emergency personnel with a firearm and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.
Arrest records show he is being held in the Richmond County Jail without bond and has an initial court appearance scheduled for September 11.
Documents also revealed that another firefighter, Jerry Louis Scott, was shot at but was not injured. Both Scott and Shepard are firefighters with the Ellerbe Fire Department.
This is still an active investigation by the sheriff’s office and the NCSBI.
