8 homes lost in the Outer Banks from churning waters caused by Hurricane Imelda

DARE COUNTY, N.C. — Hurricanes Imelda and Humberto continue causing havoc along parts of the North Carolina coast.

Cleanup is underway after eight waterfront homes have collapsed on the Outer Banks. Fortunately, the homes that were destroyed this week were unoccupied.

Officials say Imelda is still churning up waters and could threaten more structures over the next few days.

“We’re moving just as quickly as we can to get some sand out here, to get a beach out here, to hold the sand, to do the things we’ve got to do to preserve the beach and maybe continue Buxton in the future, and hopefully this won’t happen again,” said Bobby Outten who is the manager of Dare County.

Beach nourishment and jetty repairs are scheduled for the area in 2026.
