75-year-old man killed in car racing crash in Newark, Del., on Friday: Police

A 75-year-old man was struck and killed by a BMW allegedly racing down a road in Newark, Del., on Friday afternoon, police said.

According to police, a black BMW 335 was racing another unknown vehicle down Bear Christiana Road southbound at around 3:23 p.m., on Aug. 22, 2025.

At the intersection with Freedom Road, the BMW struck a maroon Chevrolet Trax at a high rate of speed as the Chevy attempted to turn left onto Freedom Road from the northbound side of Bear Christiana Road, police said.

The BMW struck the front right side of the Chevy, resulting in the death of the 75-year-old man driving the Chevy, police said.

The driver of the BMW, identified as a 49-year-old man from Newark, is in the hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The identity of the man killed is being withheld until the family is notified, police said.

Police closed the intersection for around 3.5 hours as they investigated.
