6-year-old dies after shooting himself, police say

Police found the child unresponsive inside the house with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face.

MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, Md. — Police are investigating reports of a fatal accidental shooting involving a child in Montgomery Village on Tuesday afternoon.

At 2:45 p.m., police were called to the 10100 block of Maple Leaf Drive at 2:45 p.m. for reports of a “code.” Police say that means there was a person who was unresponsive. 

When officers arrived, they found a 6-year-old boy who shot himself in the face. First responding crews provided CPR on the child. Despite life-saving efforts, the child died on the scene. 

There was one adult in the house at the time of the shooting. It is unclear who the gun belonged to. Investigators are working to determine if it was registered. 

The shooting is still being investigated. It is unclear if the child was playing with the gun or if someone else may have accidentally fired the gun.

It is unclear if charges will be brought against anyone. The Major Crimes Division is investigating the shooting. It is not being investigated as a homicide at this time.
