Officials believe the fire could have been started by a heating lamp being used for a chicken coop.

WASHINGTON — At least 50 firefighters worked through the early morning hours to extinguish a large single-family home on Sunday.

Crews were called to the 15800 block of Philips Oaks Drive in Spencerville for reports of a large exterior fire. When they arrived, flames could be seen shooting out of the roof of the home, and there was a partial structure collapse.

There was one occupant inside at the time of the fire. The occupant told officials they heard noises, saw the fire from the deck, and ran out of the home to a neighbor’s house. While there, they called 911. No injuries were reported,

A preliminary investigation showed the fire originated outside, under the back deck, inside a chicken coop. Officials believe a heat lamp being used to keep the chickens warm is likely what caused the fire.

An estimate of $1 million in damages was caused.
