Whitson said doctors confirmed Hailey sustained a severe brain injury, and now she can only breathe on her own. She cannot talk or eat on her own.
SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — A 3-year-old girl is fighting for her life after surviving a near-death experience when a car went into Dundee Lake.
Hailey was sitting in her car seat when the vehicle she was traveling in plunged into the lake on Sunday, August 10.
The driver, 23-year-old Nafeeze Samad, got out of the car that was submerged in the water and stood on top, leaving Hailey inside. Samad was arrested on multiple charges, including DUI.
On the day her world turned upside down, Hailey’s mother, Tamika Whitson, said courageous deputies and firefighters broke through a window and pulled out her daughter, whose body was lifeless. However, they were able to revive her after CPR.
Now, nearly two weeks later, Hailey is still recovering at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, but she still has a long journey ahead.
Whitson said doctors confirmed Hailey sustained a severe brain injury, and now she can only breathe on her own. She cannot talk or eat on her own.
Whitson is determined to stay by her daughter’s side and focus on her recovery as Hailey works to rebuild her strength.
“Despite the devil’s attempt to take her from us, my baby is proving to be stronger than anyone could imagine. She is fighting with everything she has, and I believe with time, prayers and support, she will continue to defy the odds,” said Whitson.
#Prayers4Hailey fundraiser
Right now, managing finances is a bit overwhelming, so the family is asking for help to fund Hailey’s medical care, said Whitson.
Whitson said funds raised in the fundraiser will go towards Hailey’s rehab and therapy, medical bills, equipment, transportation, daily needs, lodging and long-term recovery support.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your love, your prayers, and your support,” said Whitson. “Hailey is a fighter, and with faith and community, we believe she will continue to push through this storm.”
