A man and a 3-year-old boy were shot on Monday outside a drugstore in Durham.

According to the Durham Police Department, the shooting happened outside a Walgreens on the 700 block of Fayetteville Street.

Police said the man and 3-year-old were in a car in the parking lot when a suspect drove through the parking lot of the Walgreens and shot at the vehicle

Multiple police officers were seen Monday afternoon outside the Walgreens.

EMS took both victims to the hospital. The 3-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries, while the adult suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the 3-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries. There were at least 13 evidence markers on the ground at the scene, and a customer at the store said she heard multiple gunshots.

The relationship between the man and child is currently unknown.

Mark Anthony Middleton, Mayor pro tempore for Durham who is in Washington, D.C. with Mayor Leonardo Williams for a Juneteenth celebration at the White House, provided WRAL News with the following statement on the shooting:

“I am sickened by the regularity of shootings in our city and angered by those who block us using every tool to combat this scourge. The heart of our city beats for that injured baby tonight and the mayor and I will not relent in bringing every tool and strategy that comports with our values to bear on this cancer eating away at our city.”
