Three people, including the suspected gunman, were killed in what appeared to be a “domestic-related” shooting outside a Berwyn middle school on Tuesday afternoon, according to Berwyn police.

Berwyn police officers responded to Lincoln Middle School, 6432 16th St., after hearing gunfire near the west suburban campus around 4:05 p.m., police said in a news release.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man firing a rifle into another vehicle just before firing shots at responding officers as they approached, according to police. The officers took cover and did not return fire, authorities added.

The incident ended with the deaths of three people at the scene, including the gunman, who died in “what we believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound on scene,” Berwyn police Division Commander Michael Fellows said.

The situation appears to be “domestic-related,” authorities said, adding that all parties involved had been accounted for and there was no ongoing danger.

No identities had been released by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as of Tuesday night.

Lincoln Middle School was placed on a “hard lockdown” during the incident, but no other injuries were reported, authorities said.

The West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force forensic team remained on scene processing evidence as an investigation remained ongoing, police said.
