More than 2,000 customers are without power Monday in Durham County after Duke Energy said utility equipment was damaged overnight.

A Duke Energy spokesperson said a broken power pole and other damaged equiment left more than 2,000 customers without power in RTP. Several apartment complexes were impacted, and WRAL News received a report that traffic lights were out near Davis Drive and in the Brier Creek area.

The outage began at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday night, and Duke Energy said the estimated restoration time for the outage is 11:15 a.m. on Monday.

In Chapel Hill, W. Cameron Avenue was briefly closed between Basnight Lane and Kenan Street due to a large fallen tree, which also took down utility lines. Duke Energy’s outage map showed more than 600 customers in the area without power as of 6 a.m.

The outage in Chapel Hill has been restored.

WRAL meteorologist Chris Michaels said strong winds overnight likely contributed to the outages. Gusts peaked between 40 and 45 mph between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday night in the Triangle.
