CLEVELAND (WJW) – Two lanes have opened on the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway after a water main break created headaches for drivers and commuters for days.
SkyFOX captured aerials Wednesday morning showing the traffic nightmare during rush hour.
Cleveland Water said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that crews had identified the location of the leak and were working to control the water flow while keeping customers in service.
The Shoreway was closed at Lake Avenue and Clifton Boulevard and cars were being detoured onto Lake Avenue.
Wednesday evening, however, Cleveland city officials confirmed that two lanes have reopened on the Shoreway. Drivers are encouraged to drive safely in the area.
“These kinds of things are challenging because they create a problem with ingress and egress into and out of our central business district. I understand the sensitivity around this,” Cleveland City Council President Blaine Griffin said.
Griffin said he has received many calls from residents and visitors since the break happened last Thursday.
“It’s my understanding, after talking to Public Utilities Director Martin Keane, that they are throwing every resource available at this, working 24/7 to address the issue. I think it’s great that customers aren’t losing water while they fix this water main break,” Griffin said.
Cleveland Water did not provide an estimate on when the repairs would be finished.
