HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities say an 18-year-old shot and killed a young father after carjacking someone else in west Houston.

Henry Steven Aguilar, 18, has been charged with capital murder and evading arrest in connection with the shooting death of 25-year-old Felix Caxaj.

According to the Houston Police Department, the shooting happened Sept. 21. That night, officers were called at about 11:05 p.m. to the 6300 block of Skyline Drive after reports of a robbery and carjacking.

At the scene, police were met by a man who said he had been carjacked by three Hispanic men, one of whom was carrying a rifle. The victim said two of the suspects fled in his vehicle, while the armed suspect – later identified as Aguilar- fled in a black, four-door sedan.

As the investigation continued, officers were then flagged down to a man lying on a sidewalk nearby. That victim, identified as Caxaj, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said they learned that after the robbery on Skyline Drive, Aguilar drove to the corner of Unity Drive and Skyline Drive and tried robbing Caxaj. Police said Caxaj tried defending himself but was shot by Aguilar.

Through the investigation, authorities were able to find the vehicle Aguilar was in. A day following the deadly shooting, Aguilar would be taken into custody following a short chase.

Authorities were also able to identify two other suspects, among them a 16-year-old, who accompanied Aguilar on the carjacking.

The two other suspects, 18-year-old Jhalmar Ariel Aguilar-Soriano and the 16-year-old, were arrested on Tuesday. Aguilar-Soriano was charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and theft, while the 16-year-old was charged with aggravated robbery and theft.

Authorities believe all three suspects have committed additional violent crimes on or around Sept. 21 using a black Infiniti G35 sedan and a short-barreled rifle with a white tip.

Prosecutor Ryan Volkmer says Henry Aguilar is facing a capital murder charge in connection with the death of Felix along with an evading charge and aggravated robbery.

It comes nearly two months after Aguilar was convicted of deadly conduct and sentenced to a year at the county jail for an unrelated shooting case from April.

“Take into consideration any back time or any kind of credit the jail might have given him but he was sentenced to a year in the county jail in July of 2025,” Volkmer said.

The DA’s office confirms Aguilar spent 119 days at the county jail for the deadly conduct conviction, even though he was sentenced to 365 days.

“The sheriff gives the three days’ credit for every day of sentence at Harris County Jail, so in this situation one year, which is 365 days. It ended up being 112 days. They ended up letting him go,” criminal defense attorney Joe Vinas said.

HCSO confirms on Wednesday afternoon Aguilar had credit for 119 days and was given at 3 for 1.

ABC13 asked how long this has been the approach at the jail, but we’re awaiting a response.

Aguilar is at the Harris County Jail on a $1 million bond for capital murder in connection to this weekend’s shooting death of Felix on Skyline Drive.
