WASHINGTON — An 18-wheeler caught on fire inside the 3rd Street tunnel Tuesday morning.

The fire was on the northbound side near New York Avenue Northwest and the northbound side of the tunnel was closed as emergency crews respond to the fire. Initially, no traffic was moving in either direction, but southbound lanes reopened as of 7 a.m. and northbound lanes reopened before noon.

Just after 9 a.m., authorities partially opened northbound lanes, except after the Massachusetts Avenue exit. Drivers can travel northbound in the tunnel and use all exits up to Massachusetts Avenue, traffic officials said.

According to D.C. Fire, the passenger compartment of the 18-wheeler is on fire. Officials have not said whether the driver got out, but said there are no injuries reported.

D.C. Fire was able to get a secure water supply and extinguished the fire.

There were 100 gallons of diesel fuel aboard the truck and a hazmat team is helping. Fire officials checked the smoke conditions in the building above the tunnel and said there were no issues.
