At-Home Paint Night Ideas Every Couple Should Try

AKA: the surprisingly hilarious, low-key romantic, and perhaps shockingly intimate date you didn’t know you needed

A few weeks ago Nic and I tried something totally new…and OH. MY. GOSH. We were wheezing laughing by the end. You know those dates where you’re like, “Okay this is officially going in the rotation?” This was one of those.

Let me set the scene:

We put the kids to bed, pulled out some of our kids’ art supplies, and decided to paint portraits of each other. No rules. No skills required.

And honestly? It might be my favorite date we’ve done in a while. Something about staring at your spouse’s face and REALLY trying to paint them—while they’re trying to paint you—just makes everything feel playful again. It’s flirty, it’s creative, and it gets you out of your “scroll on the couch till bedtime” rut REAL fast.

I told our social media magician, Megan, about this date night idea and she loved it so much that she and her husband tried it out as well! Not only did they try it out, they created this video of the date so you can see how fun it is:

WHY THIS DATE WORKS

Painting your partner forces you to look at them with curiosity again—the kind we all had when dating. You end up teasing each other, complimenting each other, and making memories that stick.

Plus, it’s insanely inexpensive. Megan grabbed this little paint set for $10 off Amazon and it had everything BOTH of them needed! Talk about cheap!

Do NOT underestimate the power of a simple date that makes you both feel like kids again!

4 Ways to Do This Date

Let’s be honest… You can do this date any way you want. But here are four fun and flirty variations that are perfect for your at-home date night!

Or, if you aren’t ready to activate your Leonardo D’Vinci mode just yet, consider getting an adult paint-by-numbers kit on Amazon.

(Psst…you could also turn this into a sexy date by getting a paint kit from Love Is Art!)

1. Paint Each Other’s Portraits (The OG Version)

You sit across from each other and paint what you see. Don’t overthink it—just have fun with it! At the end, do a dramatic reveal. Guaranteed laughs. Zero artistic skill required.

How we did it:

We each had a tiny canvas and a beginner-friendly paint set. Nic was so serious about painting my freckles and I couldn’t stop laughing at his “concentration face.” 10/10 recommend.

2. The “Switch Every 5 Minutes” Challenge

Set a timer for 5 minutes. You paint. Timer dings? SWAP CANVASES.

You keep adding onto each other’s artwork until the final result is this hilarious, chaotic masterpiece. This one gets wild in the best way.

3. Follow a Bob Ross (or other artist) Tutorial

The vibes? Immaculate.
You two — side by side — listening to Bob Ross say “happy little trees” every 90 seconds? I mean…romance.

Here are the channels we used/loved:
🎨 Bob Ross: https://www.youtube.com/@bobross_thejoyofpainting
🎨 Wow Art (easy beginner tutorials): https://www.youtube.com/@wowartpainting

You can choose the same tutorial or surprise each other with different ones!

4. Holiday-Themed Paint Night

This is SUCH a fun seasonal twist. Pick a holiday, grab a themed tutorial, and turn it into a festive little memory.

Here are some adorable beginner-friendly options for Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, and 4th of July

You can seriously repeat this date all year long.

As Megan and I experiment with other versions of this date, I’ll add the videos she creates right here in this post. Meanwhile, stay tuned and grab that $10 paint kit so you’re ready when inspiration hits!

The best dates are the ones that let you play.
The ones that get you face-to-face.
The ones that make you remember, “Oh yeah…we really like each other.”

Painting each other made us feel light, connected, and totally in sync — which honestly is all I ever want from a date night.

If you try this one, PLEASE tag us @dateyourspouseofficial so I can see your masterpieces. 🎨💛
