10 Things Boxing Champ Alycia Baumgardner Can’t Live Without

[ad_1]

Okay. The, oh. [grunts]

Very nice. GQ.

[bright keys music]

Hey GQ, this is Alycia The Bomb Baumgardner,

the undisputed world champion of the world.

And these are my 10 essentials.

[upbeat trap music]

This necklace is a gift that I got for Christmas.

This is a special gift to my heart.

This is my grandmother,

her name is, we called her Grandma Meja.

My grandma is from Korea

and she moved to the States a long time ago

with her husband, my granddad.

She passed from COVID.

This was just a reminder to see my grandma every day,

and I think it’s so important.

And I get a lot of my strength,

just my courage to keep pushing forward in life,

because that’s what my grandma did,

and she’s just a part of who I am.

When I visit her the last time in the hospital

before I left for the world title,

I was like, Grandma, I’m coming back.

I’m gonna be a world champion.

And those were my last words to her

and we made that happen.

So it’s very special.

[upbeat trap music]

This right here, this is the belt, okay?

This is the belt that I’ve had my mind on

since I turned professional.

This was the belt that I was fighting for.

I’m like, it was made to happen.

I beat the world champion in her backyard

and took the belts back to America.

And now we have my face on it.

It’s just a reminder of all the work

that I’ve been putting into the sport of boxing

and just elevating women’s boxing,

and who I am as an athlete,

who I am as a boxer.

It ain’t a tubby, you know, this is the real hardware.

This is what you don’t wanna

get caught lacking without, right?

[upbeat trap music]

As you can see, this is my journal.

I love to write, I love to express.

This is therapy.

As a fighter, it’s a lonely sport.

I’m most of the time by myself.

And to reflect and to put my thoughts on paper

is important to me.

And I’ve been journaling since I was a 10-year-old.

So I have multiple journals.

This is just a reminder

and a reflection of how far I’ve come in times

where I was in dark places.

And it shows, you know,

through the trials, the ups and downs, I’m victorious.

I lost one in the airport, I was very upset.

I’m like, somebody knows my life out there.

Maybe one day I might get it back.

I don’t know.

[chill hiphop music]

I love to read.

I like the feel of the book.

I like to use my eyes that I’ve been blessed with

and I like to highlight things.

I like to sticky note things and go back, and read.

One of the books that I’m currently reading

is Flowers on the Moon.

It’s just a great quote book.

One day I just opened it up.

I’m like, Whatever it lands on, it’s for me.

And I found it again.

And it says, it’s a question.

You want them to love you unconditionally,

but how unconditional is your love for yourself?

And I had to reflect.

I’m like, This is a great question.

And like I mentioned, boxing is just so lonely.

You have to know yourself in and out the ring.

So this is just a really good book,

just to ask myself questions,

the hard questions that we don’t like to ask ourselves.

So here we have our water, awa.

This is essential in life.

As you know, I’m an athlete.

I need my water after a hard workout in the gym.

And what’s best about this, it’s a foam roller.

So like, I’m drinking, right?

And I’m rolling.

Okay, you gotta roll these muscles out.

And this is perfect.

A gallon a day.

Keep my weight down, keep sharp, stay hydrated.

It’s all essential.

[chill hiphop music]

Perfume, you know, as a woman, we all love to smell good.

This is, like, something I love just buying.

It’s just different perfumes, different smells.

This one is called Under the Lemon Trees.

It’s fresh, it’s fruity,

it’s definitely made for the summer.

And I just love to smell good.

Look, okay, all over. [laughs]

[chill upbeat music]

So we got the lip gloss.

You already know the winter is over in Detroit.

There’s no ashy lips going around.

We need moist lips.

And I’m choosing Fenty.

It stays on very nice.

I’m putting this on all the time, in the gym,

before I’m about to work out.

Lip gloss, lip gloss, lip gloss.

I’m always gonna have lip gloss on me.

Boxing is this, like, hardcore, tough and rough.

But I love to just showcase beauty and the beast,

that women can be feminine,

they can be in their feminine energy,

makeup done, lip gloss on, nails done.

And I also like being in killer mode.

When it’s time to go, it’s time to go.

[chill groovy music]

This.

This is one of the most essential things

that us black women use, okay?

This is for the edges, and if it’s anything,

I’m gonna make sure my edges is slayed

before the fight, after the fight,

before I go into the gym, after I leave the gym.

This is my go-to, okay?

As you can see, we swipe the baby hairs.

This is something that we need.

When you go to the beauty supply store,

they’re right there on the counter and they’re a dollar.

Gotta get you one.

[chill groovy music]

So we have our scarf.

We’re gonna use our scarf every night.

It gets to move in.

I don’t know how it comes off during the night,

but I wake up literally in the middle of the night,

I’m like, half sleep.

Like, look like I put my scarf on,

like, my hair gotta stay cool, right?

My mom’s been putting scarves

on our heads since we were young kids.

And it was a stocking camp before.

My mom, like, listen.

I’m like, Ma, we got scarves now, we can use scarves.

[Alycia laughs]

Boom.

Then you ready to go to sleep, okay?

The hair is protected, the edges are slayed and laid, okay?

Obviously, my phone is essential.

This is where it all goes down.

In the DMs, on Twitter, on Instagram, the Twitter war.

So like, it’s something I love to engage in

because I got time, and when I got time,

Imma send that tweet, and I’m gonna get an alert like,

AB, I need you to chill.

I’m like, They’re talking, so I’m talking.

It’s a fight mode.

Okay, leave me alone.

You know, I use it for many very things.

I have the Bible app

which is a great reminder that I get at nighttime.

What can I do to be better?

How can I encourage others?

Again, my phone is just essential when it’s necessary.

Thank you for having me

and I hope these 10 essentials help you understand

a little of who I am, and make sure you tune

into my next fight coming to you very soon.
