1. ERASERHEAD (1977)

Henry resides alone in a bleak apartment surrounded by industrial gloom in Eraserhead. When he discovers that an earlier fling with Mary X left her pregnant, he marries the expectant mother and has her move in with him. Things take a strange turn when the couple’s baby becomes a bizarre lizard-like creature that won’t stop wailing. One film fanatic claims that Eraserhead is an experience you won’t forget.

2. DOGTOOTH (2009)

Dogtooth instantly establishes a disturbing atmosphere with its opening, which offers no context as to the characters’ situation, merely a shot of a tape recorder playing a list of “new words” in what we, as viewers, can only assume is some form of lesson. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, he has gone on to enjoy a successful career, featuring critically acclaimed movies such as Poor Things and The Favourite. 

3. WRONG (2012)

Wrong has a simple premise of a guy who loses his dog and goes on a journey to find him, but things become weird and twisted the longer it goes on. It’s well worth a watch, and the less you know going in, the better!

7. FREAKS (1932)

When trapeze artist Cleopatra learns that circus midget Hans has an inheritance, she marries the lovesick performer while planning to steal his fortune and run off with her lover, Hercules. When Hans’ friends and fellow performers discover what is going on, they band together and carry out a brutal revenge that leaves Hercules and Cleopatra knowing what it truly means to be a freak.

8. DOGVILLE (2003)

A barren soundstage is stylishly utilized to create a minimalist small-town setting in which a mysterious woman named Grace hides from the criminals who pursue her. The town is two-faced and offers to harbor Grace as long as she can make it worth their effort, so Grace works hard under the employ of various townspeople to win their favor.

9. REPEATER (1979)

Repeater is a comic thriller that tells the story of a woman’s confession of murder. The film rearranges the evidence and then leads the audience into a story proving a confession is not as easy as one might think.

10. GUMMO (1997)

Teen friends Tummler and Solomon navigate the ruins of a tiny, tornado-ravaged town in Ohio populated by the deformed, disturbed, and perverted. When not gunning down stray cats for a few bucks, the boys pass their time getting stoned on household inhalants. Many viewers admit that the bathtub scene in Gummo lives rent-free in their heads.
