It happened on McCartan Road in Linden around 9:30 a.m.
Investigators say that a Nissan Altima went off the road, crossed the center line, hit a driveway culvert, and came to a stop. The passenger was found dead at the scene, and the driver had fled.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
