Police said no suspect is in custody.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — A woman was found dead after police responded for a welfare check in Sacramento.

According to the Sacramento Police Department, officers had responded to the 6100 block of Ventura Street for a welfare check when they heard sounds of shots fired. 

Officers backed away and set up a perimeter to search for a suspect, but no suspect was found.

In an update, police said a woman was found shot at least once. She was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. 

Initially, police said their officers came under fire during the call, however, investigators will be investigating whether or not their officers were shot at. 

No suspect information is available and no one is in custody.
