Wilson man dead after gunfight with police; it wasn’t his first

[ad_1]

Two Wilson police officers are on administrative leave after a shootout that left a man dead.

According to police, officers Little and Celaya were questioning two men after a report of shots fired in the 900 block of Hood Street when one of the men – Ed Lee Edwards III – fired on them. The officers returned fire, killing Edwards.

It was not the first time Edwards shot at police. In 2012, he was arrested and charged with attempted murder for firing on officers in the 300 block of Daniel Street.

Edwards, 48, has spent time in jail in the 1990s for armed robbery, in the 2002s for assault with a deadly weapon and again in 2015-16 for assault with a deadly weapon

It is standard protocol that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation looks into any incident where a law enforcement officer fires a weapon in the line of duty. While that investigation is ongoing, Little and Celaya are on administrative leave.

A person is dead after exchanging gunfire with police officers, according to the Wilson Police Department.

Wilson police asked that anyone with information about the confrontation on Hood Street call the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.
