Why is early voting popular in North Carolina?

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Voters across the battleground state of North Carolina can begin heading to the polls for early voting Thursday.

Michelle Ingram, who plans on voting early, said, “More convenience and less excuses. My primary reason for voting early is so I can provide transportation and motivation for those on Election Day.”

According to the North Carolina State Board of Elections, 65% of voters statewide voted early in-person in 2020.

North Carolina State University political science professor Steven Greene said the Tar Heel State’s importance in this year’s presidential election could be a big factor in motivating voters.

“I expect we’ll see a lot of people out there tomorrow and in the following days,” Greene said. “We’re simply getting way more attention this election than we have in the past. We’ve been a swing state in the past, but not quite like this year.”

This is also the first major election since the state’s new voter ID law, which took effect in 2023.

“The truth is, within political science, we’ve seen that it just ends up not really having much of a negative impact that people feared that it would,” Greene said.

If you aren’t yet registered to vote, you may do so during this period.
