Whole Foods set to open ninth location in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Whole Foods is set to open a new store in San Francisco, making it the ninth location in the city. The San Francisco Planning Commission approved the project on March 7, a city spokesperson told KRON4.

Whole Foods will be located at 2675 Geary Blvd., the former location of a Best Buy store that closed years ago.

The opening date has not been determined. KRON4 asked a Whole Foods spokesperson for a timeframe for when it will open but was not given an answer in their response.

Whole Foods will be located at the City Center shopping plaza, which includes Target, PetSmart, Chipotle and an AT&T store.

The proposed 49,825-square-foot grocery store will be 25,030 square feet making up the sales floor, according to city documents. The remaining space will be used for checkout, storage areas, freezers and other employee spaces.

KRON4 recently visited the shopping center. There was no signage of a Whole Foods opening on the vacant building.

Whole Foods may have competition across the street. Trader Joe’s is located on the other side of Geary Boulevard at 3 Masonic Ave. This Whole Foods is located near the University of San Francisco and Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High School.

Whole Foods store in SF closes after 1 year

The opening of Whole Foods on Geary comes after a location at 1185 Market St. in Civic Center closed in April of 2023. The Mid-Market store closed after only one year of being open.

That location closed because of drug-related retail theft and other safety-related issues, according to SF District Supervisor Matt Dorsey. He was “disappointed” by the closure but “unsurpised.”

There are currently eight Whole Foods locations in San Francisco.

Whole Foods has been owned by Amazon since 2017 when the online retail giant purchased the grocery chain for about $13.7 billion.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
