Wheatland begins $10.3 million roadway improvement project

(FOX40.COM) — The rural community of Wheatland is getting a big upgrade on one of its main roadways as Caltrans began a $10.3 million project along SR-65 on Wednesday.
Celebrations were held with community members, city and county leaders, Caltrans officials and law enforcement to kick off the seven-month construction project that aims to address several issues along the busy roadway.
While Lincoln and Roseville have built bypasses for the increasingly used SR-65, Wheatland has been subject to logging trucks, heavy traffic and local traffic traveling through the heart of their downtown.
This constant traffic has led to the 1.4-mile stretch of roadway to experience continued deterioration and less-than-suitable conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.
“By upgrading the roads, pathways, and bicycle facilities in Wheatland, we are fostering connectivity, supporting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike,” Caltrans District 3 Acting Director Sergio Aceves said.
Along with replacing pavement, the project will upgrade shoulders, improve pedestrian and cyclist connections, and improve four drainage culverts and curb ramps to make them compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
The project will also add a traffic signal at the intersection of SR-65 and McDevitt Drive.
State Route 65 runs from Roseville to the SR-65/SR-70 junction near Olivehurst.
