What led to the death of a man whose skull was dug up by children?

DUMONT, Colo. (KDVR) — The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office recently identified a skull found in 2018, and now they need the public’s help in piecing together what happened.
The skull was found in Dumont on the edge of Silver Lakes Drive and at the edge of Clear Creek. Jenny Fulton, with the sheriff’s office, showed FOX31 the area under a telephone pole where the discovery was made.
“Some local kids were playing in the area and they were doing a little bit of digging, and they came upon a human skull. And that was discovered on May 11, 2018,” Fulton said.
The sheriff’s office said a forensic anthropologist examined the skull on May 23, 2018, and found it to be a male of European descent. He had been dead for at least four months, but likely for a year or more.
No evidence of trauma was found. The skull was sent to the University of North Texas to extract DNA, which was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.
After the DNA was submitted, it was a waiting game for investigators — until the Colorado Bureau of Investigation stepped in.
Who happened to David ‘Michael’ Crady?
Fulton said a positive ID would not have come without the help of the late man’s family, who were asked for DNA samples.
“Two family members submitted DNA samples, and on May 4 of this year — you know, we’re talking six years later from when the skull was found — we got a positive identification that the skull belonged to David ‘Michael’ Crady, who was born in 1955,” Fulton said.
The sheriff’s office learned that Crady was a bit of a nomad and had not spoken to his family in a while, which was not unusual for him because of his lifestyle.
His family said he had a free spirit and positive energy, and he was a light to be around. It’s one of the many reasons investigators want to solve this puzzle.
“Now it’s our job to do the hard work of determining what happened to him because we want to give the family answers,” Fulton said. “If anybody has any information, we really encourage them to contact us.”
Anyone with information about the cold case is asked to contact the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office at 303-679-2393.
