WESH 2 wins several Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists awards

WESH 2 News has been honored with five prestigious awards by the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists. The awards recognize the station’s commitment to quality journalism, community service and public affairs.WESH 2 received the Community Service Station of the Year award for the second consecutive year for its coverage of issues that affect Central Florida residents. The station’s initiatives include spotlighting the issue of hunger in Central Florida by raising awareness and funds for the Second Harvest Food Bank; producing the first ever live broadcast of “Orlando’s hometown race,” the OUC Orlando Half-Marathon; supporting Special Olympics Florida through media training opportunities for athletes; promoting mental health awareness campaigns across the community; and creating the Saving Our Streetsreporting initiative.Saving Our Streets also won in the Series/Franchise: Hard News category. Saving Our Streets showcases the efforts of individuals and organizations to curb violence in Central Florida. This storytelling takes a special focus on youth-related programming and calling for community action by sending out a periodic “SOS” – notifications informing the community means of becoming involved. WESH 2 News Sunrise won for best Television Newscast in the Morning/Midday category for coverage of the one-year remembrance of the tragic death on a FreeFall theme park ride. Investigative reporter Greg Fox and photojournalist Gordon Portell won for “WESH 2 Investigates: Uncollected Tolls on I-4 Express” in the Transportation Reporting category.WESH 2 News Anchor Michelle Imperato won for best Evening Anchor for her work on the anchor desk, as well as field anchoring and specialty reporting.“I am very proud of our team’s dedication to excellent journalism and their hard work to serve our community,” says John Soapes, President and General Manager of WESH 2. “Our team has an unwavering commitment to Central Florida and it is an honor to be named Community Service Station of the Year once again.”The awards were announced at a banquet in Orlando on Saturday, April 20th. The program celebrates excellence in broadcast and digital journalism across the state.
