MERCER ISLAND, Wash. — All westbound Interstate 90 lanes are closed on Mercer Island due to police activity, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

WSDOT first posted about the closure around 12:45 p.m. According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson, Bellevue police attempted to stop a vehicle when the vehicle stopped in the westbound lanes of I-90 near Bellevue Way and the driver threw “what appeared to be an explosive device.”

Johnson said two people are in custody and that the bomb squad is responding to the scene.

WSDOT is advising travelers to seek an alternative route and that there is not an estimated time of reopening.

I-90 eastbound reopened around 1:45 p.m.
