St. Augustine’s University alumni gathered for a vigil for current students on Sunday as the school faces a financial crisis.
The vigil started at 5 p.m. at the St. Augustine’s Chapel.
Vigil organizers said the vigil is “an effort to show physical and spiritual support to those who have been affected by the concerns of the university’s status.”
“It is in my imagination that each of you represents a community a household, a group of people who are also praying for St. Augustine’s [and] praying for the current students who are working tirelessly” one speaker said. “They are doing their job as students.”
The vigil comes as the school deals with multiple financial issues, including a possible loss of accreditation and teachers not receiving paychecks.
On Wednesday, WRAL News learned some students hadn’t received tuition refund checks, with one family saying their child hadn’t received one in the fall semester either.
