CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Vice president Kamala Harris walked into a packed house at Johnson C. Smith University in west Charlotte on Wednesday. The stop is a part of her nationwide economic tour. She says, “I feel very strongly that we need to be in the community listening and giving people information about the work that we have done that will help folks.”

While taking part in a moderated conversation, the Vice President touted the economic accomplishments of President Joe Biden’s administration, and talked about what the White House would look like if they win a second term in November. She says that includes more access to capital, home ownership opportunities, and better health care. The administration also wants to focus on one of the biggest issues they see for Americans: “Debt is probably one of the biggest issues that holds people back in our country,” says Harris.

Harris is praising a new proposal from the Consumer Protection Federal Bureau. It would no longer allow medical debt to be factored in to someone’s credit score. Harris calls it a game changer. She says, “We have now made it so that medical debt cannot be a part in calculating your credit score.”

According to a poll by East Carolina University’s Center for Survey Research, former President Trump leads President Biden by 5 points in North Carolina. Trump won the Tar Heel state in 2020 by 1.3 points.
