A pair of police officers were killed and a third seriously wounded during a late-night shooting in Connecticut Wednesday, state troopers said.

The gunfire erupted on Redstone Hill Road in Bristol. Authorities provided few other details, but a large law enforcement presence remained on the scene Thursday morning.

“We are still working diligently to gather accurate information from our investigators and all that are involved,” Connecticut State Police said in a tweet early Thursday. “We will provide a press conference as soon as we can. Again, please be patient as the scene is still very active and fluid.”

Connecticut State Police personnel have been requested to assist the Bristol Police Department with the investigation.

Ted Krawiec, a resident in the neighborhood, told NBC Connecticut he was playing a moonlit tennis match nearby when the gunfire broke out.

“All we heard was sirens and then we heard the helicopter flying around from Page Park which is about two miles from here,” Ted Krawiec said. “It’s scary, especially Bristol is, I mean, a peaceful town and it’s scary to hear something like this is happening here.”

A procession for the officers who died was carried out early Thursday. Law enforcement officers and first responders escorted their fallen comrades from Bristol Hospital to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Farmington.
