The driver returned to the scene after fleeing to face the police.

The driver behind a hit-and-run that struck two people in Needham on Monday later identified themselves to the police.

According to the Needham Police Department, at around 7:12 p.m., police were notified that two people were struck by a car at the intersection of Hunnewell Street and West Street.

The driver fled the scene, the police said. Witnesses told police the car was a dark-colored Honda sedan or SUV. Car parts left at the scene were also from a Honda.

Both of the people struck sustained serious injuries and were taken by ambulance to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

The Needham Police say the driver later identified themselves, and the incident remains under investigation.

According to WCVB, the driver returned to the scene about two hours after the incident and told a reporter it happened after leaving work.

He left the scene because, he said, “I was just so scared.”
