KINSTON, N.C. (WNCN/AP) — Former President Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, held a rally in Kinston Sunday after he campaigned in Gastonia, west of Charlotte, and Greensboro on Saturday, with a stop in Salem, Virginia, in between.
The visits by Trump are a flurry of late activity in the only swing state in which he won in both his 2016 and 2020 campaigns. Trump also has scheduled a rally in a building at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh on Monday.
Those four rallies will bring his total events in North Carolina since Oct. 1 to nine. His running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, has been in the state seven times during the same period, most recently also on Sunday and before that on Friday.
Trump’s team has said it is confident about his chances in North Carolina. Democrats see Trump’s attention on the state as a signal of optimism for Harris.
“The repeat appearances may signal Trump’s campaign is in trouble,” said Democratic state Rep. Marcia Morey of Durham. “If Trump continues with his dangerous, violent rhetoric these last few days, it may backfire. A campaign of personal retribution does not win votes from people.”
At Sunday’s rally at the Kinston Jet Center on Jetport Road in Kinston, Trump drifted between prepared remarks and familiar stories.
Trump, who was in Pennsylvania earlier Sunday, praised David McCormick, the businessman running for Senate in Pennsylvania, appearing to briefly lose track of his location but quickly recovering.
“Where’s David? Is he around some place?” Trump said. “You know we just left him. He’s a great guy.”
Some rallygoers began leaving almost immediately after the event began late.
One of them was Whitney Riley, 60, who said she desperately wanted to stay but had another event. She noted Trump started late.
“I got to see him land. I got to see him open,” said Riley, wearing Trump’s signature “Make America Great Again” hat and an American flag scarf. “And that’ll have to be enough.”
