Trump and Harris Campaigns Clash Over Debate Microphone Rules

The Trump and Harris campaigns are in a heated disagreement over whether microphones should be muted during their upcoming debate, casting doubt on former President Trump’s participation. Trump’s campaign is pushing for a rule where each candidate’s microphone is muted when not speaking, similar to the setup in his June debate with Biden on CNN. They argue this would ensure a more orderly debate.

The Harris campaign, however, opposes this, insisting on keeping both candidates’ microphones live throughout the debate. They argue that Trump’s team prefers muted mics because they lack confidence in Trump’s ability to stay composed and presidential for the full 90 minutes. Harris spokesperson Brian Fallon suggested that Trump’s advisors might be hiding their doubts from him to avoid embarrassment. Fallon also stressed that Vice President Harris is ready to handle Trump’s interruptions and misinformation directly and that Trump should not rely on a mute button to avoid confrontation.

Senior Trump adviser Jason Miller rejected the idea of changing the debate rules, accusing the Harris campaign of trying to avoid a fair debate. He claimed this request is part of a pattern of avoiding public scrutiny, citing previous instances where Harris reportedly avoided interviews and press conferences. Miller also referred to allegations that Harris had requested a seated debate with notes and opening statements, a claim the Harris campaign denies.

Trump addressed the microphone issue during a visit to Virginia, asserting that the original agreement was for muted microphones, though he would be fine with them being left unmuted. This disagreement has raised fresh doubts about whether the September 10 debate will happen as planned. Although Trump initially agreed to an ABC News-hosted debate with Biden, he reconsidered when Harris replaced Biden on the Democratic ticket, questioning his willingness to debate Harris at all. Both campaigns eventually agreed on the ABC News debate, but Trump has sought additional debates on Fox News and NBC News, while the Harris campaign has only committed to the ABC event for now.

Adding to the complexity, Trump criticized ABC News after its “This Week” program featured critical commentary and an interview with Senator Tom Cotton, which Trump deemed biased. This led him to question why he should debate Harris on that network. The debate is scheduled to be held in Philadelphia, with David Muir and Linsey Davis as moderators.
