CHICAGO — As a round of storms swept through Chicago on Sunday morning, a lightning strike damaged a building and sparked a fire on the Near West Side.
The subsequent blaze caused some damage to the Tri-Taylor building, but it may have been much worse if someone who was driving by didn’t raise the alarm.
A fire chief, who happened to be driving in the 2200 block of West Taylor Street, spotted bricks below and pulled over to investigate before quickly realizing there was a fire.
The bolt of lightning sparked a blaze that spread into a least one unit, but luckily no one was inside the unit.
Fire crews were able to evacuate all the residents in the building and it does not appear that anyone was injured in the fire.
The affected unit has since been boarded up and scaffolding has been put up to offer some protection in case any more loose rocks fall.
