Titan submersible debris yields more presumed human remains in latest recovery effort

More presumed human remains were found in the Titan submersible debris following the completion of the Coast Guard’s latest recovery efforts, officials announced Tuesday.

Human remains were first discovered when the debris field was located in late June, beneath the waters of the North Atlantic at a depth of approximately 12,500 feet.

The recovery efforts of remaining parts were finally completed last Wednesday in conjunction with the U.S. Navy, and included the extraction of the still-intact titanium endcap of the 22-foot vessel.

The Coast Guard on Tuesday reported finding the additional presumed human remains, which were carefully removed to be analyzed by U.S. medical professionals.

Next steps for forensic testing of the materials are currently being determined by the Coast Guard and several international investigative agencies. Ahead of a public hearing on the incident, the Marine Board of Investigation will continue its analysis and interviews of witnesses, the statement added Tuesday.

The Titan submersible, which went missing on June 18 shortly after dipping below the surface of the Atlantic, was determined to have imploded following an around-the-clock search-and-rescue effort.

All five people onboard were killed in the accident, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, who founded the company that led underwater expeditions to the wreckage of the Titanic.

Four other people died in the tragic event, including businessman Hamish Harding, diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, billionaire Shahzada Dawood, and Dawood’s 19-year-old son, Suleman.
