The community-centric, art-focused coffee shop announced via Instagram that it will close on June 9, writing, “We have come to the point where we are just in the trenches. At this point I do not see a way out of the beautiful, messy hole that we are in. Unfortunately, we are needing to close our shop. Over the next month I will be here to sell off the rest of our yummy coffees, art supplies and wonderful art we have collected over the years. So please come, help me spread our last bits of love.”

The New York-style Jewish spot’s last day of business was on Sunday, May 26. A statement on Instagram read, “The cost of doing business has ballooned so fast in the past three years, we can now never make enough to cover the minimum rent at a restaurant location in Portland selling latkes and knishes, let alone all the other ever increasing costs. We’re not sure how anyone can maintain the level of quality food and service we value without going into massive debt. We don’t want to be bosses. We don’t want to be business moguls. We don’t want to profit off of other people’s labor. We want to succeed, but only in a way that fits in with our values and beliefs.” Owners Aaron Tomasko and Rachel Brashear plan to resume their previous careers as musicians.

It doesn’t get much fresher than eating a meal in the very place where the ingredients were grown. Topaz Farm’s resident “farm-to-plate” chefs and culinary power couple Christian and Janelle Ephrem will craft a series of five-course meals sourced from Topaz itself, with menus designed mere days in advance and produce harvested just hours before the dinner. You’ll get to take a seat at a long communal table and dine beneath a 500-year-old oak tree.

The vegan doughnut shop releases its lineup of June and July flavors today, and it’s all killer no filler: Look forward to passionfruit butter mochi, strawberry rhubarb fritters, Arnold Palmer buttermilk bars, stout ganache and pretzel, blackberry crisp, rosemary pecan crumb old fashioned, raspberry rose bombolini, and Thai tea. However, I’m most intrigued by the savory chopped cheese doughnut, made with plant-based chopped hamburger, onions, and house-made cheese sauce with a cherry tomato garnish.
