Donald Trump triumphed in Republican primaries across the country on Tuesday, securing his grip on the GOP nomination for president and bouncing rival Nikki Haley from the race.

Anti-Trump Republicans did show up for Haley in some parts of New England, though, handing her a victory in Vermont by a slim margin. Trump dominated in Maine, where he won the state with about 72% of the vote. Trump’s margins in Massachusetts were a bit smaller: He garnered 60% of the GOP vote, compared to about 36% that went to Haley.

Town-by-town data shows where Haley performed well and gave insights into the types of voters who are disillusioned with Trump and may not vote for him in November.

Haley won in 68 Massachusetts cities and towns, according to Associated Press results updated through Wednesday morning. She dominated in a swath of communities just west of Boston. Of the municipalities that she won, Newton had the most overall ballots counted. In that city, just over 62% of ballots were cast for her, compared to 34.5% for Trump.

One of her largest margins of victory came in tiny Lincoln, which had a very low voter turnout. Haley received 409 votes to Trump’s 146 there. Other larger communities that Haley won include Cambridge, Hingham, Wellesley, and Brookline. She also won some towns in western Massachusetts that only had a few hundred ballots counted.

Compare these results to a map of the state’s richest communities, and a pattern becomes clear. Wealthier cities and towns tended to vote in favor of Haley. According to 2020 census data, Dover had the highest median household income of anywhere in Massachusetts. Haley won there with almost 62% of the vote.

Other extremely wealthy towns like Wayland, Weston, Sudbury, and Carlisle all picked Haley over Trump.

Below, find the 10 communities with the highest percentage of Haley voters. Communities that had less than 100 ballots cast were excluded from this calculation.

  • Lincoln, 72%
  • Brookline, 69%
  • Cambridge, 69%

  • Sherborn, 68%
  • Needham, 66%
  • Wayland, 66%
